True Geordie Podcast

I currently study Fashion Marketing & Promotion and I decided to choose this module outside of my course modules because I have become particularly interested in Graphic design since studying my course so I wanted to branch out further in the field by learning about Motion graphics. I intend to use the knowledge of Motion graphics for my upcoming promotional campaign videos to add a proficient edge.

The title of the module is called Transmedia and the pathway I chose is Motion Graphics. The module had 4 major pathways (Motion Graphics, Animation, Sound and Set design) and the end goal was to collaborate on a project with selected team members from each pathway.
In this collaboration my task was to work on the Intro for the animated version of True Geordie podcast.

   DEVELOPMENT

My research started with looking at ‘Transformers’ animated intro for some inspiration. I like the use of 80s references, the colour story and the vortex background.
Although the style is very different from our podcast animation, I decided to look more on comic style fonts of which I found a few I could adapt for the intro. I had to make sure that the style I chose goes with the same style of the animation in order for it not to look disjointed. Using the two images below, I created a couple of variations of typography inspired by the use of grain and long shadows.
This was the first attempt focusing on just shadows, grainy textures on the text and 3d effect. I explored implementing different paper backgrounds that would go with this style. I found that the one done with the lined paper came out best compared to wrinkled paper background as it would have appeared too heavy with the text.

Second attempt at creating the typography, I decided to skip the grainy texture and font of the first attempt. This text effect is created based on retro comic covers and it features 3D style effects, strong outlines and halftone patterns as seen in retro screen printing techniques. The halftone patterns are to add interest while incorporating a different variation in colour.

Still not satisfied with the outcome, I decided to make a new typeface that would be suitable for the animation. Using Illustrator, and starting out with the font ‘ Futura Bold condensed’. This time the text was transformed and warped.
To make the halftone effect, I have copied and pasted a duplicate of the text face and given it a black and white gradient fill which was pixelated to form a halftone pattern using colour halftone. I experimented with different colour variations in the shadows, halftone pattern as well as outlines to obtain the desired final colour story.
This is the final typography the group liked, we have kept it simple removing the halftone pattern as well as choosing the colours that stand out the most.
